Israel has intended to make a show trial in the case of Marwan Barghouti. He is accused—not formally, but by officials in the press—of leading the terror against Israel. In the West Bank he is the head of the Tanzim, the military arm of Fatah. He is also an elected member of the legislative council of Arafat’s Palestinian Authority and second only to Arafat in popularity among Palestinians.
He was captured by Israeli armed forces in April and jailed since then under horrible conditions. It was not until August 31, 2002, that Mr. Azmi Bishra, a member of the Knesset, was allowed to visit him. The “trial” has been postponed until October 3.
