USSR (country)

U.S.S.R. (“CCCP” in the Russian alphabet): The largest group of nations ever to form a single nation, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics encompassed one-sixth of the total land surface of the Earth. The total land area of the union was 22,402,076 square kilometres, creating a single frontier that spanned a distance greater than the entire length of the Earth's equator.

By 1946 the Soviet Union was comprised of 15 soviet federated socialist republics (S.F.S.R.), including 6 territories, 123 regions, 20 autonomous republics, 8 autonomous regions and 10 autonomous districts. The 15 republics of the Soviet Union were: Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhistan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Lithuania, Moldavia, Latvia, Kirghizistan, Tadzhikistan, Armenia, Turkmenia, Estonia.
