British Social Democracy

The “Social Democrat” and “British Socialist,” 1897-1913

See Overview of the “Social Democrat” and “British Socialist,” 1897-1913, printed in the last issue, December 1913.

Note by Transcriber - Ted Crawford

The following index of articles in date order has been transcribed from the front contents page of the Social Democrat and British Socialist from 1899. Copies were used from the British Library, The University of London Library and the London School of Economics Library. In the first issues (1897-1898) a contents page does not exist and the articles had to be checked within the issues themselves. A great many articles are anonymous while quite often, particularly in the earlier years, such articles simply reprint sections from other publications that the editors thought would be of interest to their readers. A short – 900 word – but informative history of the journal, by H.W Lee, regretting its demise which appeared in the last issue of British Socialist has been transcribed. See below. From COPAC, The British Library, Cambridge University, Oxford (Bodleian) Library and perhaps the National Library of Scotland appear to have a full set. Twentieth Century Press which produced it was controlled by the Social Democratic Federation or rather H.M. Hyndman.

The Dictionary of Labour Biography, Volume VIII, edited by Bellamy and Saville, contains a most informative short history of The Twentieth Century Press (pp. 204-208). Unfortunately there is practically nothing about Social Democrat in this article though a mass of material on the finances of Twentieth Century Press and a great deal on the weekly Justice. The Warwick Guide to British Labour Periodicals notes that Justice ceased publication in 1925 and was eventually amalgamated with the Social Democrat which continued until 1933. It seems that this was a change of name when the paper became a monthly rather than an amalgamation with a previously existing publication. This later journal of the same name from an organisation of the same name was not continuous with the first one listed here and is of much less interest and importance.
